A whole host of football pundits have predicted that Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale will look to leave the club in the January transfer window. It comes as debate continues to swirl over the number one position in the team after a number of changes in the past few weeks.
Ramsdale found himself quickly boosted to first-choice after signing from Sheffield United for roughly £30million in 2021, able to play out from the back as well as making the routine saves required. In terms of competition for his place, Matt Turner was signed last summer but was often used as a backup option.
The USMNT international left after just one-year though as Nottingham Forest made an offer and the opportunity for first-team football was taken. It left the Gunners short in that position though, leading them back into the market where they signed David Raya from Brentford on an initial loan with an option to buy — which is expected to be triggered next summer for £27million.
It left many wondering about how two first-choice goalkeepers could co-exist when they each want a spot that is commonly associated with consistency. At first it was Ramsdale starting, but since the international break, Raya has been given the nod three times in a row.
The Spaniard kept clean sheets against Everton and PSV Eindhoven before making both a world class stop and an error in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham. In light of the game, only further discussions have been held amongst fans and pundits alike about the goalkeeping situation.
