Matty Lusty faces a spell on the sidelines with injury
Andrew Mitchell believes he can offer a lot more than “10 or 15 minutes off the bench” after rejoining Dungannon Swifts.
The striker has returned to the club where he spent three prolific seasons.
Swifts boss Rodney McAree moved quickly to sign him after Larne loanee Matty Lusty picked up a serious injury.
And he took just six minutes to pick up where he left off in 2017, scoring on his second debut against Willowbank in the Irish Cup at the weekend.
Mitchell’s career has fallen off track after injury-disrupted spells at Glenavon, Glentoran and most recently Coleraine.
But the forward, who turns 30 this month, believes he can still make a big impact, and is looking forward to working again with McAree.
“I’m delighted to be back. Rodney is someone who placed an awful lot of faith in me,” he said.
“I thoroughly enjoyed playing under him — he gives you that freedom and belief that you can just go out and play.
“He knows what I’m about and how I play best.
“Hopefully, from Saturday, people can see that person who was here seven years ago. I’ll still be able to score goals, even though I’m coming 30 this month.”
Mitchell joined Dungannon in 2014, scoring almost 50 times in the League across three seasons.
He moved to Glenavon, scoring 18 Premiership goals in his first year, before struggling for form and injuries.
Most recently, he was at Coleraine, but a series of fitness issues — including a blood clot on his pelvis — restricted him to a handful of appearances.
“It was a difficult time — I definitely enjoyed my time there, unfortunately injury came within three or four months of getting there,” he said.
