A talented Liverpool-based singer songwriter has described the challenges she has faced leading up to the unveiling of a unique 50 part video series.
Katie Nicholas, 28, from Ormskirk, has introduced to fans the Songwriting Diaries, sharing over 10 years of unreleased songs. The series begins with the first ever song she wrote at age 12, inspired by Blackbird by The Beatles.
The project is symbolised by the metamorphosis of a butterfly. Katie, who sold out the Philharmonic Hall in November last year, likens her journey to a caterpillar being stuck in a cocoon for a long time before finally emerging as a butterfly.
In an interview with the ECHO, Katie said that the project stems from a lot of frustration. Facing issues including bereavement, losing jobs, and industry let-downs, Katie struggled to get her music out.

Although she said "I’ve always had a really nice community grassroots following around Liverpool", she told the ECHO: "every time I tried to put music out I felt the shutters come down".
At one point Katie lost confidence and “went mute” after a mentor told her “you’ve got the looks but don’t have the songs”. Katie then stopped playing music, believing no one would sign her. Listening to her music, it’s clear how wrong that mentor was. She thankfully embraced her independence and continued forward with no label or management.
Her resilience is admirable as she endeavours to “say to any other musician that in this day and age we can do this ourselves” and “prove to myself that these songs should come out".
