A South American football expert says he is "absolutely baffled" at Liverpool's refusal to buy a midfielder he describes as a "young Javier Mascherano".
For a while, Anfield looked the most likely destination for young Brazilian midfielder Andre Trindade, the Reds having enquired about the Fluminese star in the summer of 2023. However, Andre wanted to stay at his boyhood club until December, when Brazil's football season ends.
Jurgen Klopp subsequently signed Wataru Endo but many still expected a January move for Andre, and excitement built among fans after the young player won the Copa Libertadores. Despite this, Liverpool sources said they have no plans to bolster their midfield in the current window.

While Fulham have been linked with the player and Atletico Madrid now reportedly keen, South American football expert Tim Vickery is surprised that there hasn't been more interest in a player that has "only grown" since the summer.
He told Sky Sports News: "I'm absolutely baffled. Even Fulham - who have been closest recently - I think that they seem to think that signing this player is not a priority. Liverpool were the club who were closest to signing him in the summer. We understand that a big money offer came in.
"Since then (Andre's) only grown, he's won the Copa Libertadores, he's played well in a bad Brazil side, did well in a losing cause against Manchester City in the final of the Club World Cup.
"He's a central midfielder who brings you so much. He does remind me of a young Javier Mascherano.
