Tottenham came away with a 4-0 victory from Aston Villa in the early kick-off on Sunday in the Premier League.
Ange Postecoglou made three changes to the Tottenham side that beat Crystal Palace the previous weekend at home for a game that his side came into in fifth place, five points behind Villa with a game in hand. Postecoglou's men also came to Villa Park with eight days' worth of work behind them on the pitches of Hotspur Way while Unai Emery's team were in action on Thursday night, drawing 0-0 at Ajax in the Europa Conference League.
For Spurs, Pedro Porro was back in the team after his hamstring injury and Pape Matar Sarr has had a better week following his back problem so the 21-year-old Senegal international started in the midfield with Rodrigo Bentancur dropping down to the bench. Brennan Johnson made a big impact with two assists from the bench against Palace and he started with Timo Werner taking his place among the substitutes instead.
The first half brought little in the way of clear cut chances for either side as Spurs held most of the ball but struggled to use it well enough in the Villa half. The hosts' half-chances came mainly from Tottenham's loose passes as they tried to play the ball out from the back.
Then five second half minutes suddenly gave the match a different complexion. First Spurs lost Micky van de Ven to what looked like a hamstring injury in the 49th minute and just a minute later, Dejan Kulusevski sent Sarr away down the right and the young midfielder whipped in a pinpoint ball for James Maddison to touch home between two defenders.
Three minutes later, Kulusevski won the ball back high up the pitch and Son Heung-min raced away before teeing up Johnson to curl home past Emiliano Martinez.
