Two of the cheapest Michelin star restaurants are on Liverpool's doorstep

Two of Britain and Ireland's cheapest Michelin star restaurants are right on our doorstep.

Dining in a Michelin star restaurant is a treat and usually - it's an expensive treat. But not all venues that have been awarded the coveted star are going to set you back a lot of money.

One Michelin star indicates "a very good restaurant in its category"; two stars is for "excellent cooking, worth a detour"; and three rates "exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey." Those who live in and around Liverpool are lucky, because there are three Michelin star restaurants just a short drive away, in Aughton.

Two of those restaurants, The Barn and So-Lo, have been named in the guide for the cheapest restaurants for dinner. Both restaurants have one Michelin star. Opting for the lunch menu is sometimes the key to getting a good value Michelin star meal, most often, there are fixed-price menus on offer.

According to the Michelin Guide, both The Barn and So-Lo are among the cheapest menus available. So-Lo, on Town Green Lane, is a converted former pub that serve up "modern, flavoursome cooking".

The guide reads: "Chef Tim Allen has plenty of experience behind him, and it shows in the seasonally-influenced cooking that has the good sense to let each core ingredient shine." Three courses from Thursday to Saturday at lunch can cost £45.

The Barn, on Prescot Road, is part of the Moor Hall estate. It offers a more "relaxed, accessible" restaurant than its two Michelin star sister restaurant in the main house.
