Virgil Van Dijk has praised Liverpool’s resilience after the Reds won a fourth game of the season having gone down 1-0, with the captain saying he is proud of the team’s willingness to believe in themselves and stay calm.
Liverpool beat Wolves last weekend and Austrian side LASK in Linz on Thursday with a familiar theme in both, with Jurgen Klopp’s men falling behind to a cheap goal in the first half before blowing the opposition away in the second period.
It means the Reds go into Sunday’s clash with West Ham at Anfield with 13 points from 15 in the league and a perfect record in Europe, having overcome significant obstacles such as two red cards and a number of injuries to key men.
Van Dijk said: ‘(The resilience)’ is something to be proud of. It should be like that. We have the quality to make a difference. Whether you start or are on the bench, you always have to have that belief and it looks like we definitely do.
‘We started slowly (against LASK) but it was always going to be a bit difficult because the changes we made (11 to the XI), we had a lot of players who hadn’t played for a long time. But obviously when you are 1-0 down at half-time with the set-piece, it doesn’t really feel that nice.
‘We still had spells of some good football and created some moments, so we were always going to be in the game. Then it’s about showing a reaction again after the break, and stay calm and cool in the head and then find a way. In the second half we were good.
‘You’ve seen in the last couple of weeks, if you watch closely it’s a fantastic group to be part of. We have a lot of quality, a lot of younger players, players who are getting new roles and they are enjoying that as well.
‘But at the end of the day football is about results.
