Virgil van Dijk believes he is now back to his best, three and a half years after suffering an ACL injury, when sharing a heart-warming message to Joel Matip.
The Liverpool captain infamously suffered the injury following a reckless challenge from Jordan Pickford early on in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park in October 2020. He was ruled out for the rest of the season as a result, and also missed out on captaining the Netherlands at the delayed Euro 2020.
Returning in time of the 2021/22 season, the centre-back made 51 appearances in all competitions as the Reds challenged for an unprecedented quadruple, winning both the League Cup and FA Cup but missing out on the Premier League title and Champions League at the final hurdle.
With Liverpool then suffering a disappointing transitional season last time out, suffering premature exits from all cup competitions and failing to qualify for the Champions League, Van Dijk was one of the players facing the sternest scrutiny about his performances. Unsurprisingly, it was suggested that he was not the same player since suffering the ACL injury.

Jordan Henderson and Fabinho also struggled badly for form last season, before completing unexpected moves to Saudi Arabia in the summer. In contrast, Van Dijk was promoted to Reds captain by Jurgen Klopp.
And while the aforementioned pair have underwhelmed in the Gulf State, the Dutchman has rediscovered his top form to reiterate his status as one of the best defenders in world football.
