And after Michael Owen and Emile Heskey missed a hatful of chances at the other end, Morrison infamously claimed when being interviewed after the match that he would have scored a hat-trick had he been afforded some of the chances that fell the England pair’s way.
Fast forward two weeks to the second leg at Anfield, and Liverpool were out for revenge. Running out emphatic 5-0 winners to book their place in the final, the home crowd took great glee in Morrison missing a number of chances, including one embarrassing mis-kick from just six yards out in front of the Kop.

Now a pundit on Sky Sports, Morrison has never been forgotten on the red half of Merseyside as a result of those ill-judged comments back in 2001. But he is not the only player whose words in the public domain have come back to bite.
