Alfie Devine has left Plymouth Argyle supporters wanting more after making his mark on his debut for the Championship club on Saturday afternoon. Starting the season in League One with Port Vale, the starlet was recalled by Tottenham early on Wednesday before he was immediately sent on loan to Argyle for the remainder of the campaign.
Despite only having a couple of days to work with his new teammates, Devine was brought straight into the Plymouth team for their home clash against Cardiff City. Whereas some managers may have named the player on the bench before initially easing him in, head coach Ian Foster, who previously coached the attacking midfielder at Under-19s and Under-20s level for England, threw the youngster in at the deep end and he immediately repaid him with an assist.
Operating as one of two attacking midfielders just behind striker Ryan Hardie, Devine linked up with the frontman 21 minutes after Perry Ng's 10th-minute strike to level things up. Forced to the left touchline after a deflection had seen the ball go out of the Cardiff penalty box, Devine, once in possession, drove towards the area with purpose and fired in a low cross with his left foot that Hardie placed into the bottom corner.
On the pitch for a total of 77 minutes before he was replaced by Adam Randell, Devine made an impact with one shot on target, two successful dribbles from a possible three and three passes into the final third. He also contributed defensively by winning four of his six duels and making two clearances, two interceptions and three recoveries.
