Jamie Carragher believes Everton will get some of their points back, when the Premier League reveals the outcome of their appeal.
The Toffees are this week expected to learn the fate of their appeal over the 10-point deduction they received in November for breaching the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability rules (PSR).
The charges were implemented on the Toffees after they recorded losses in the excess of £105million over a three-year period, ending in 2022.
The penalty was the stiffest sanction handed out in Premier League history, but Carragher expects Everton to receive some points back.
'I would expect some points to come back,' he said on Monday Night Football.
'I think the initial reaction from everybody in football when they saw the 10-point deduction was that it was harsh.
'Yes, Everton admitted a breach so there will be some sort of sanction. What should it be? That's never happened before so it's a grey area.
'The big thing for me is that Everton will get something back. I think it will be two to three points maximum.'
Should they win their appeal, the Toffees would move ten points clear of the bottom three, pushing them up to 12th in the standings.
A partial reprieve, meanwhile, would leave Sean Dyche's team anywhere between 12th and their current 17th spot.
Everton climbed out of the relegation zone with a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on Monday night, moving ahead of 18th-placed Luton on goal difference.
The Hatters, however, have a game in hand and Carragher believes it is in the Premier League's best interest to reach a swift decision over Everton's appeal.
'That can't happen in terms of it going past to the end of the season, I don't see how it's even feasible,' he said.
