Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are hoping to sign Benfica technical director Pedro Marques as part of the organisation's new structure under head of football operations Michael Edwards.
Steps are underway to ensure the long-term future of the Reds following Jurgen Klopp's exit at the end of the current campaign. In a complete restructure it was announced former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards would return to a new position answering directly to FSG rather than the club itself.
His first task would be to appoint a sporting director at Anfield - anticipated to be AFC Bournemouth's Richard Hughes following his departure announcement last week - and in turn the duo could find the club's next manager.

After that, it is understood that initial plans for a 'multi-club' ownership model appealed greatly to Edwards and were key to changing his reluctance to rejoin his former club.
As well as having Liverpool within his remit, the 44-year-old would be tasked with identifying another club for FSG to invest in. This was an ominous prospect with little information surrounding it just hours ago, however Marques' potential involvement in such a project provides an encouraging image of how events may unfold given his previous work and reputation within the sport.
