The Premier League are nearing two groundbreaking and historic moments in its history in relation to its financial rules and potential punishments, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham all waiting to witness the outcome. In the space of a year, the division has announced two of its first cases of alleged breaches when it comes to profit and sustainability rules.
One of those cases surrounded Everton, a side who were referred to an independent commission in March for alleged breaches spanning the 2021/22 season. It is currently unknown which specific charge is being placed against the Merseyside outfit, which «strongly contests» the allegations made in a statement earlier this year.
The Toffees reported losses in the region of £371.8million over the past three years, while profit and sustainability rules state clubs can only lose a maximum of £105million or face charges. It remains to be seen exactly how this will play out, but a report from the Daily Telegraph claims that the Premier League are pushing for a 12-point deduction should the allegations be upheld by the independent panel.
That could prove to be a landmark decision in the handling of financial conduct if proven, given there have been no instances of this in recent history in the Premier League. The other case the league faces a battle over comes in the form of Manchester City, which has become fairly complicated.
The Premier League champions were referred to an independent panel in February for an alleged 115 breaches of league rulings between the period of 2009 and 2018. A five-year investigation from the league presented them with several different claims against the club.
