Why play continued for over a minute before Crystal Palace penalty against Liverpool awarded by VAR
Liverpool’s players were left furious after conceding a second-half penalty against Crystal Palace.
Jean-Philippe Mateta went down after a challenge by Virgil Van Dijk and Jarell Quansah. However, referee Andy Madley initially waved play on.
The game continued for one minute and 45 seconds before Madley was told to go over to the monitor and review the challenge. Following a VAR review, a penalty was given, and Mateta sent Alisson Becker the wrong way to open the scoring.

However, Jurgen Klopp and his players were left less than impressed by the call. Quansah was also immediately replaced by Ibrahima Konate, but the change had long been planned before the penalty was awarded.
But the ECHO understands the reason behind the delay in sending Madley to the monitor to check the challenge was because the VAR had to confirm the foul by looking at various angles of the incident and contact.
Then, once VAR confirmed the foul, they communicated to the referee that they were checking for an offence in the attacking phase of play. The penalty is also believed to have been awarded because Quansah was deemed to have kicked Mateta in the calf.
Reflecting on the decision on TNT Sports, Rio Ferdinand said: “I thought it was a penalty when I saw it.
“There was definitely contact; the young centre back, Quansah, didn’t see Mateta there, and there was contact. In today’s game, it’s definitely a penalty.”
