Xabi Alonso six games away from making history ahead of potential Liverpool appointment

Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen took another big step towards the Bundesliga title with Sunday’s 2-0 win over Wolfsburg as Liverpool contemplate an approach in the hunt for a new manager.

The result means unbeaten Leverkusen will lift the crown should they win their next six league games regardless of how chasers Bayern Munich, ten points behind, fare. The club could win it sooner if Bayern slip up in any of their matches.

Leverkusen are on course for their first Bundesliga title in their history and it would signify the first time a different team to Bayern had won the league for 12 years. Leverkusen are also in the semi-final of the German cup and in the last-16 of the Europa League.

It is possible that Leverkusen and Alonso meet Liverpool in Europe as the Reds consider manager options ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s summer exit. Bayern are also interested in Alonso with Thomas Tuchel set to leave at the end of the season.

It is believed that both clubs will make official approaches for talks with the Spaniard, who will likely cost a compensation fee. During his career, Alonso played 210 times for Liverpool, winning the 2005 Champions League, and 117 games for Bayern.

Despite contrary speculation, new Bayern chief Max Eberl says the club have not made an official approach for the 2010 World Cup winner. “We haven't spoken to anyone yet,” he said last week.

“We will start conversations at some point, but respectfully. We also know that one or two candidates have a different club with us. It’s not an easy search.”
