Alexis Sánchez (34) has taken to social media to thank Olympique de Marseille fans ahead of his move to Inter Milan, which was confirmed on Saturday.
Sánchez ultimately spent just one year at the Vélodrome, however, it was a successful one. In his one and only season in Ligue 1, he scored 14 goals in 35 games, guiding the club to another podium finish. Sánchez’s contract expired at the end of the campaign, and there was uncertainty as to whether it would be renewed.
Marseille have recruited heavily in the forward positions. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ismaila Sarr, Iliman Ndiaye and now Joaquín Correa have all arrived to bolster Marcelino’s attacking options. There was therefore no space for Sánchez, whose return to Inter Milan has now been confirmed.
Before leaving, however, the Chilean international addressed a video to the Marseille fans on Instagram, detailing how it was never his intention to leave the club. “I had excellent moments here and I’ll keep great memories. A big thank you to the people of Marseille, who always supported me, in the good and the bad moments. I also wanted to clear some things up: I always wanted to stay at Marseille. That didn’t just depend on me. You need two to make an agreement. The technical management had other choices, which I respect,” he said.
