Tottenham's pre-season friendly against Leicester City on Sunday may well see Alfie Devine unleashed by Ange Postecoglou once again. A regular in first-team training at Hotspur Way over the past couple of seasons, opportunities in the team have been hard to come by for the player but the chance to train day in, day out with the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min will only have enhanced his game.
Rated extremely highly by the club and certainly one for the future, the ex-Wigan Athletic man was handed 45 minutes in Tuesday's 3-2 defeat against West Ham. One of 11 players introduced at the break, the attacking midfielder was not fazed at all and was one of Spurs' standout players on the night.
Looking made for one of the two No.8 roles in Postecoglou's system, Devine was instead utilised on the right of the front three as Giovani Lo Celso, who scored Tottenham's first of the contest, and Pape Matar Sarr were instead used as the team's advanced midfielders. Maybe not a role he is accustomed to due to his attacking midfield position, the 18-year-old was very bright down the right flank and created a number of openings for the team.
Devine was always an outlet for Spurs and his teammates had full confidence in giving him the ball, with the player not far away from reducing the deficit seconds before Lo Celso netted. Unlucky to see his effort from a tight angle kept out by Lukasz Fabianski after the ball had travelled across the face of goal and landed at his feet, Spurs did score from the resulting corner as the Argentina international lashed home Davinson Sanchez's flicked header.
Although the game may have ended in defeat for Spurs, Postecoglou could take a number of positives from the contest, with Devine most certainly one
