Ange Postecoglou has warned his Tottenham players to not expect any sympathy from social media after Ryan Sessegnon's pleas for his own fans to not abuse him.
Sessegnon underwent successful hamstring surgery on his right leg this month, having only just returned from a similar procedure on his left last summer. It will mean that the 23-year-old has played just 10 minutes from the bench in more than a year due to the hamstring problems that have previously dogged his time at Tottenham.
With the surgery on his left hamstring in the summer having strengthened that group of muscles and reduced the chance of a reoccurrence to a very low level, the same is expected now with the right leg, which will allow the young left-back to get on with his career when he returns to action next season.
However, frustrated Spurs fans have been abusing him on social media over the past year for his lack of availability and did so again after the latest news from the club, some telling him to «retire» or «hang up your boots» and others wanting him out of the club.
Within his own statement after the surgery, in a rare social media post, Sessegnon had signed off with the message: «Speaking on behalf of anyone who's been in this situation, please be careful what you say online. Words hurt and no-one chooses to be in this position.»
Postecoglou was asked on Friday for his views on Sessegnon's message to the supporters and social media in general.
