Arsenal receive Matthijs de Ligt transfer update as defender addresses Bayern Munich future
Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt has spoken about his future at the German club. The Netherlands international has struggled for game time at times this season and was linked with a possible move to Arsenal during the January transfer window.
The 24-year-old started two of the team’s first 15 league teams as he struggled for fitness, as well as competing with Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae for a centre-back berth. A mix of international tournaments and injuries to his teammates has allowed De Ligt to start nine of Bayern’s last 11 games, despite the German giant signing Eric Dier on loan in January.
The former Ajax prodigy arrived from Juventus in 2022, signing a five-year deal, but was linked with Arsenal after seemingly falling down the pecking order under Thomas Tuchel. Ahead of the Netherlands facing Germany during the international break, De Ligt was asked about the possibility of himself and teammate Jamal Musiala leaving Bayern in the summer.

“Where to go? On holiday?” De Ligt laughed. “But no, I don’t think so. I hope for us and for Bayern that we’ll both stay. That’s what I’m assuming, too.”
This is a possible transfer blow for Arsenal ahead of the summer window, though manager Mikel Arteta does already have William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes as a formidable centre-back partnership. The Gunners can also call upon Ben White, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Jakub Kiwior as alternate centre-back options.
