Cole Palmer has broken his silence on social media following Chelsea's 4-2 win over Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-final. The 21-year-old midfielder doubled the Blues' lead over Enzo Maresca's side shortly before half-time with a fine effort slotted into the bottom corner.
However, Palmer could've given Chelsea some much-need breathing room earlier in the tie had Raheem Sterling not assumed responsibility for a spot-kick. The former Manchester City and Liverpool winger won the west Londoners a penalty after he was brought down by Abdul Fatawu inside the box.
Palmer, who has scored each of his last five spot kicks, picked up the ball and as he walked towards the penalty spot, Sterling asked for the ball. The 29-year-old had tried to take a penalty off of the youngster earlier in the season, but Enzo Fernandez stepped in and ruled in the youngster's favour.
This time around, nobody stood in Sterling's way and he was finally successful in his mission to take a spot-kick – though his tame strike was collected by Jakub Stolarczyk. Despite a terribly poor performance from the Chelsea number seven, who was later booed off by the home faithful at Stamford Bridge, Palmer led the Blues to victory.
In stoppage time, the Manchester City academy graduate provided a lovely assist for Carney Chukwuemeka. Speaking on BBC One after the game, Palmer was quizzed on his performance and his recent call-up to the England squad.
«Hard work. We know what Leicester are like, they are a top team and play good football,» said the midfielder. «A difficult afternoon. Glad to get back to Wembley.
