Cole Palmer was left stunned after being involved in a bizarre post-match exchange with former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood on Monday evening. Palmer was speaking after theBlues' 3-2 victory over Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge, during which he scored and provided an assist, and was left in an awkward position after an assessment made bySherwood.
The ex-Spurs and Aston Villa boss, appearing as a pundit for Stadium Astro, made it clear to Palmer that he is the driving force in the current Chelsea side and that others around him are failing to match his performance levels. So far this season, Palmer has contributed 15 goals and 11 assists for Chelsea in all competitions, making him the Blues' top contributor to goals.
Speaking directly; to the England international, Sherwood said: «All you need is some players to play with you. I know you can't say that, but I'm saying it. I just think you need more quality around you.
»For me, he [Pochettino] needs to build the team around you and the quality that you have. But that will come with a few transfer windows, hopefully once he gets the right players in."
Palmer remained silent during Sherwood's comments, looking somewhat baffled. However, he later responded by suggesting there is plenty more to come from Chelsea.
The 21-year-old said: «There's a lot of quality there, not just me. We've got loads of other players, so hopefully the team can gel a bit more than everyone has seen. I think there is so much talent at Chelsea.
