The Premier League has confirmed that Everton's 10-point penalty for breaching profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) has been reduced. The Toffees were hit with the points deduction last November after they recorded losses in excess of £105million over a three-year period, ending in 2022.
But an independent appeal board has now reduced the points deduction to six points, which moves the club on to 25 points in the table and up to 15th place. A Premier League statement published on Monday reads: "Everton FC appealed the sanction imposed against it on nine grounds, each of which related to the sanction rather than the fact of the breach, which the club admitted.
«Two of those nine grounds were upheld by the Appeal Board, which has substituted the original points deduction of 10 for six. This revised sanction has immediate effect and the Premier League table will be updated today to reflect this.»
Everton still face a second PSR complaint for breaching rules over the assessment period running to the end of last season. Sean Dyche's side, along with Nottingham Forest who were also charged with a single breach, have been referred to an independent commission and, if found guilty, could be given a further points deduction.
Manchester City will be following the situation closely, with Pep Guardiola's side the subject of a FFP investigation of their own. Last year, the Premier League revealed that City had been charged with more than 115 alleged FFP breaches covering a nine-year period between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons.
City have previously said they deny the charges against them and it's reported an independent panel may hear evidence from the Premier League and Man City regarding the alleged breaches sometime in late
