Arsenal travel to the Etihad Stadium this weekend for what is the biggest game of their season so far. They’ve overcome some major challenges already beating Pep Guardiola’s side at home last year, going unbeaten in the league against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and again winning in north London whilst also beating FC Porto and qualifying for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 14 years.
But winning in Manchester City’s backyard will be a first for Mikel Arteta and also end a ridiculous unbeaten run of midfielder Rodri who is expected to start the game. Both sides have numerous fitness issues with several players pulling out of international duty.
With that said, football.london takes a look at what all three outcomes could mean for Arsenal. Win, lose or draw, each scenario has a different impact on the season and both sides’ title chances.
The dream scenario is for Arsenal to prove the doubters and pundits wrong, win in Manchester and keep the Premier League title race in their hands. Whilst it is most certainly the least likely of the three outcomes according to the odds, it is one which has never been as likely as it is this season.
With the win in London and the advantage in the league, there is real optimism as Arsenal travel north. A win would put them four points clear of City with nine games to go.
It would also put pressure on Arsenal and the expectation of becoming favourites for the title. Despite currently being top, Arsenal remain third favourites according to most bookies; but beating Guardiola would flip this dramatically and arguably see the title as Arsenal’s to lose.
