Jamie Carragher has joined the swathes of people praising Cole Palmer after Chelsea's summer signing scored his eighth goal of the season against Luton on Saturday. His strike was the first of three for the Blues at Kenilworth Road and was possibly his best yet.
Picking up a loose pass on the edge of the Hatters' area he took one touch before lacing a left-footed strike into the bottom corner. Less than an hour later he showed another part to his game as he deftly rounded goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski, keeping control of the ball in a crowded penalty area before sending two players the wrong way and tapping into an empty net.
It was a goal built on the sort of composure and quality that Chelsea have been missing for far too long and continues what has been a sensational first five months at Stamford Bridge for Palmer. Having previously been described within the 'mad' environment at Chelsea by Gary Neville, the 21-year-old has proved doubters very wrong and done it extremely quickly.
Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast in September, Neville was asked about the £42million price tag and the optics of the signing with the context of Chelsea's last 18 months. «It's just a little bit mad, isn't it? It's chaotic,» he said. «We've said it for 15 months with the amount of players they have signed.
