Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has slammed the role of Arsenal coach Nicolas Jover during his side's defeat to Newcastle on Saturday. It comes after a feisty clash that has left plenty of controversy in the wake of some huge VAR calls on several occasions.
The clash at St. James' Park was a tight and uneventful affair for most of the first half, only brought to life by a reckless challenge byKai Havertz on the byline. The German international leaped off the ground to try and win the ball, with the attempt seemingly sparking some angry reactions from the Magpies.
A VAR check deemed that the challenge was reckless but not dangerous, which was enough for Havertz to avoid a red card, but it wasn't the last time it would be called into action. With the game heating up in intensity, there was another flashpoint moments later, this time caused by Bruno Guimaraes.
The midfielder lunged in for a tackle that he ultimately missed, causing him to get back up to close Jorginho but leading with his forearm and elbow. This caught the midfielder and there was a slight scuffle that had to be broken up, before VAR intervention decided once again that there was no red card, despite furious protests.
The game took a turn in the second half as former Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock kept the ball in play, swinging a cross to Joelinton that found it's way to Anthony Gordon to open the scoring. There was a VAR check on three different occasions for the Willock cross, a foul from Joelinton and whether Gordon was offside.
