Glentoran players went for a walk along the Newtownards Road before their clash with Linfield
Glentoran manager Warren Feeney has hailed the stunning performance of his team which saw them hammer Linfield 4-0 - and says now the players must build on it.
While the Blues were a mess at the Oval the Glens were magnificent with outstanding Northern Ireland star Niall McGinn creating first half goals for fellow international Shay McCartan and Daire O’Connor. The former Celtic and Aberdeen winger also netted himself before the break and then brilliantly set up the impressive O’Connor after it for his second goal and Glentoran’s fourth to seal their biggest win against Linfield since 1995.
On a shambolic evening for Linfield they were fortunate that the scoreline was only 4-0 such was the dominance of the home side especially in the first half when they carved out chances virtually every time they attacked.
It was the best performance under Feeney since his summer appointment. If the Glens, who reached the County Antrim Shield final in midweek, continue to play like that, this season, which has largely been frustrating, could prove successful.
A jubilant Feeney said: “That was one of the best performances the boys have produced for some time.
“I’m not surprised. It has been coming, I knew we had this performance in us. It’s just getting it out of them. The secret now is building on it. We showed energy, hunger and passion and started the game with a great intensity.”
Feeney added: “It will take time but the boys are beginning to buy into what I want to do at this club.
