Philippe Diallo and the French Football Federation have recently come under intense criticism in France and abroad for their ‘ general framework ’ related to Ramadan fasting. A policy implemented across all age groups for the France national team that says that training sessions, team meals, and games will not be rescheduled to accommodate the potential needs of fasting players.
Red Star manager, Habib Beye has called the framework “ Religious discrimination ” and argued that it is a disproportionate measure that is focused solely on scrutinising the actions of Muslim players. “ If we do it to one religion, we must do it to all religions, and that is not the case today. We are divided when we should unite around this logic of religion and sharing. ”
Philippe Diallo the president of the FFF has hit back against these remarks in a press conference, where he has blasted what he believes to be an unfair accusation levelled at him and the organisation that he represents. “ I cannot accept when people say that the FFF carries out religious discrimination .”
He further attempted to clarify and defend the position of the Federation in implementing this policy. “ My duty is to ensure a form of neutrality in sporting practices. The Federation has set a framework, like at school. There cannot be a modification to our schedules, and to our organisation, which is linked to the implementation of a religious practice, whatever it may be .”
The president carried on by expressing “ I respect everyone’s convictions. It’s possible, if they want to fast, so as not to jeopardise the performance or health of athletes, to postpone it. No one at the Federation, starting with me, has forbidden anyone from fasting. ” He continued, “ I
