Diogo Jota should not have been sent off in Liverpool's controversial clash with Tottenham.
That's according to the Premier League's Independent Key Match Incidents Panel who believe that his second challenge on Destiny Udogie was not worthy of a yellow.
The Portuguese star endured a horror minute after twice catching Spurs defender Udogie, leading to his dismissal for two bookable offences in the 69th minute.
However the report, as quoted by ESPN, states that «the majority deemed the decision as incorrect as they felt it did not meet the threshold for a yellow card».
The panel has five members — three former players and a representative from each the Premier League and PGMOL — with the five members voting 3-2 against a booking.
While the judgement is not meant to be definitive, it provides an opportunity to assess the decisions made away from the emotional aftermath of a fixture.
Of course it wasn't the only decision in Tottenham's 2-1 win over Liverpool that was deemed to be controversial after Luis Diaz's strike was wrongly ruled out for offside.
Since then, the VAR process has been under serious scrutiny with the PGMOL even forced to release the audio footage of their discussions around the incident.
Jurgen Klopp has since called for the fixture to be replayed but this outcome is improbable.
He said: «The audio didn't change anything because I was not really interested in why things happen. I saw the outcome, I saw a goal, and I saw it didn't count. It's really important that we deal with it in a proper way.
»All the officials didn't do that on purpose and we should not forget that. It was an obvious mistake and I think there would have been solutions for it.
