Legendary Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes it will be difficult for Xabio Alonso to stay at Bayer Leverkusen if he delivers the Bundesliga title and joked that he will try to charm the Spaniard into an Anfield return.
The 42-year-old is on the verge of securing a maiden German title for Bundesliga dark horses Bayer Leverkusen, who sit eight points ahead of perennial champions Bayern Munich. It is for that reason that he is the bookmakers' favourite to succeed Jurgen Klopp when the German departs Anfield at the end of the season.
On Wednesday, however, the race for Alonso's signature heated up as Bayern Munich announced they would be parting company with manager Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season, with reports in Germany insisting the Bavarians also have their eye on Alonso.

And Carragher believes it is bad news for Liverpool if Bayern Munich are in the race for a new manager at the same time as the Reds. He said: "Yes, if there are other people in for him of course and his signature. But it would interesting, who knows if he will leave Leverkusen?
"I feel if he goes on to do what we think he's going to do and win the title there, maybe it's going to be difficult to stay. He'll have some great offers and fingers crossed it's my Liverpool. I can make a case for that."
However, Carragher, who is a former team-mate of Alonso's from the pair's time at Anfield, joked he would try and influence the Spaniard's decision on which club he chooses next as he explained that the duo still keep in touch via social media.
