Tottenham technical director Johan Lange believes that the club have taken some «very important steps in the past six or seven months» when it comes to building their playing squad. After a disappointing season which saw Spurs miss out on Europe altogether, the summer of 2023 was always going to be a pivotal one in helping the Lilywhites get back to challenging towards the top of the Premier League.
Making some key summer additions for new head coach Ange Postecoglou with players such as Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven and James Maddison signing long-term deals in north London, Tottenham then followed it up in the January transfer market with deals for Radu Dragusin, Timo Werner and talented teenage Swede Lucas Bergvall, who will link up with the club in the summer. Having started his role as technical director at the beginning of November, Lange had a key part to play in Spurs' winter transfer activity.
Speaking to the club following the closure of the January transfer window, the Dane has given his verdict on Spurs' transfer plan and what they did in the winter market.
«Firstly and very importantly we arrived into the January market completely aligned, the chairman, Ange [Postecoglou], Scott [Munn] and myself,» he explained. «We see every transfer window as an opportunity to progress and build the squad in the direction we want to take it. You always aim to be stronger after the window and use it to build a squad that is in alignment with the style of football and the methodology.
