Admittedly, if selected to start, Gomez’s performance will have little impact on retaining his place in the long-term. When he could at least topple Joel Matip in the back-up pecking order, when Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold, and Konate are all fit, all three surely start.
However, Van Dijk has previously conceded that he expects his centre-back partner from the 2019/20 Premier League title-winning campaign to take his place one day.
