Arsenal kickstart their Carabao Cup campaign this evening when they travel to Premier League rivals Brentford. The Gunners will be hoping for a successful cup run having not lifted the domestic cup since 1993.
Mikel Arteta is expected to rest a number of his first team players for the short trip across the capital with a difficult run of fixtures on the horizon. After travelling to Bournemouth on Saturday, the north Londoners take on RC Lens in the UEFA Champions League before taking onManchester City on Sunday October 8.
Tonight's game comes at the perfect chance for the likes of William Saliba, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard to recharge their batteries. However, some chances will be forced upon Arteta.
Saka, who scored in the 2-2 draw against Tottenham on Sunday, was seen limping towards the end of the thrilling North London Derby before being replaced by Emile Smith Rowe. football.londonreported at the time that the England international was in severe pain after taking a knock to his foot.
Despite there being an understanding that the knock wasn't anything serious, Arteta was on hand to provide a brief update on the forward. Speaking on Tuesday, he said: «He was limping quite badly after the match. We had to get him off the field. He hasn't been able to participate in the session. It's a possibility (he could miss Bournemouth).»
Leandro Trossard is regularly the player used off the bench to replace Saka in attack, but the Belgium international is also out having missed the North London Derby on Sunday.
