Cape Town Spurs might have won a second successive match in the DStv Premiership but veteran coach Ernst Middendorp is warning that any fight against relegation is going to be a long process.
First half goals from Ashley Cupido and new signing Katlego Maphathe saw bottom-placed Spurs advance to 10 points for the season, now only three behind Richards Bay, as they battle against the drop.
“Of course, we’re all happy to make the three points. Probably the light is a little bit brighter in the basement but we're still looking for the light in the end of the tunnel,” said Middendorp.
“But we will not see it in March and we will not see it in April, probably earliest in the month of May.
“That's something we have to believe to keep going,” he added.
Spurs’ high pressing forced several mistakes from Galaxy and saw them take their early opportunities.
“It was a game with a different approach in the first half, a bit more of a compact, not jumping up and down. We had a clear good shape at the right moment, put pressure on the ball at the right moment. I think the win was fully deserved,” Middendorp added.
Spurs now head off for two tough away games in the DStv Premiership, against Orlando Pirates on Wednesday and then at Stellenbosch on Saturday.
“Let's go there and try to do the best. We’ll definitely keep to our basic fundamentals. Beating Galaxy has helped to build a little bit confidence. And yeah, I think it is very crucial to realise it ourselves that probably we can make something against some of the big teams in the country,” he added.
