It’s been a weekend to remember for Lewis Koumas. Son of former Wales international Jason, Liverpool’s ongoing injury crisis saw the 18-year-old named in a Premier League matchday squad for the first time against Burnley on Saturday. And while he didn’t get on, it was still another valuable landmark for the forward.
Fast-forward 23 hours later and he was in the starting line-up for Liverpool Under-21s against Stoke City. In more familiar surroundings, he demonstrated exactly why he had been awarded a senior call-up by Jurgen Klopp in the first place.
Scoring a brace against the Potters, he equalised for the young Reds with a well-taken goal after controlling Calum Scanlon’s long ball forward. Powering into the box, he held off a challenge before nutmegging the goalkeeper at the neat post.

He then wrapped up the victory after the break when running onto Jayden Danns’ through-ball. Finding himself one-on-one after getting in behind the defence, his emphatic finish left the Stoke keeper with no chance.
Koumas now has seven goals from seven Premier League 2 matches for the season, while his overall record for the Under-21s this year stands at 10 goals from 15 games. Include a handful of outings for the Under-18s, and he has 15 goals from 20 appearances at Academy level. That's not bad for a player who had previously been a midfielder, before reinventing himself as a forward in the most emphatic of fashions with a four-goal haul against Middlesbrough Under-18s on the opening day of last season.
