Liverpool have released a statement regarding the racial abuse Tottenham defender Destiny Udogie suffered following their Premier League meeting on Saturday afternoon. The Italian left-back was subjected to racial abuse on social media following the dramatic 2-1 win against Jurgen Klopp's side.
Spurs released a statement earlier today condemning the «disgusting» comments aimed at Udogie. A statement on Tottenham's official website read: «We are disgusted at the racist messages directed towards Destiny Udogie on social media following Saturday’s game against Liverpool.
»We will work with the Premier League and, where possible, take action against any individual we are able to identify. We stand with you, Destiny."
Now, Liverpool have joined Spurs in releasing their own statement regarding the matter. The Reds' statement read: «Liverpool FC condemns all forms of racism and discrimination and will work with the relevant authorities and social media platforms to help identify those responsible and apply the strongest possible consequences.»
The 20-year-old was involved in one of the game's big talking points in the second half and unfortunately was the victim of racist abuse online following the match. Already down one player down following Curtis Jones' red card, Liverpool were reduced to nine men in the 69th minute after Diogo Jota was dismissed for two bookable offences.
Adjudged to have fouled Udogie on both occasions, there appeared to be minimal contact on the left-back for his first booking of the contest, before he then fouled the Italian moments later and saw red as a result. Spurs went on to win the fixture in the dying seconds after Joel Matip had put Pedro Porro's cross through his own net.
