Didi Hamann has warned Liverpool that they risk missing out on Xabi Alonso as their new manager should Bayern Munich make a move for the former Reds midfielder.
The Spaniard has transformed Bayer Leverkusen’s fortunes since taking over at the club in October 2022. Second from bottom in the Bundesliga at the time of his arrival, the German outfit are now chasing an historic treble.
Have never won the Bundesliga before, Leverkusen currently boast a 10-point lead over Bayern Munich at the top of the table with 10 games left to play. Meanwhile, enjoying an unbeaten season so far, Alonso’s side are also in the DFB-Pokal semi-finals and Europa League round-of-16.

With both Liverpool and Bayern in the market for new managers in the summer, with Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel both confirmed to be stepping down, Alonso has inevitably been linked with returns to both of his former clubs.
And while Hamann, who played alongside the Spaniard at Liverpool for two seasons, believes his former team-mate is the stand-out candidate to replace Klopp, he has warned his old club that Alonso might find it too hard to resist the lure of Bayern.
“He took over at Leverkusen last year and the team were second or third from bottom and he’s transformed the whole football club,” Hamann, speaking to BoyleSports who offer the latest Premier League odds, said. “Yes, they bought two or three players in the summer.
