Olympique de Marseille have confirmed the arrival of Medhi Benatia as the club’s new Sporting Advisor, whilst Jean-Pierre Papin has taken control of the club’s reserve team.
Benatia’s arrival is one of the worst-kept secrets in French football. The former Morocco international has been at the club’s training ground the past few days and was in attendance for OM’s draw against RC Strasbourg Alsace over the weekend.
However, the arrival has now been officially confirmed. Whilst he is not a direct replacement for David Friio, who is on the verge of joining arch-rivals Olympique Lyonnais, the former OM Sporting Director’s departure did create the space to facilitate Benatia’s arrival.
“With direct collaboration with Pablo Longoria and Stéphane Tessier, he will support in construction and implementation of the club’s sporting strategy, notably attracting, training, and retaining the best talents,” read the statement from the club.
There has been further movement behind the scenes at Marseille. Roberto Malfitano has been promoted and becomes the club’s head of scouting, whilst Papin has taken charge of Marseille B, who are on a six-match winless run in the National 3.
