When Michael Edwards announced his decision to leave his post as Liverpool sporting director back in November 2021, one theory regarding his exit quickly spread.
Supporters mooted the possibility that Jordan Henderson had inadvertently played a role after Jurgen Klopp had intervened in his contract negotiations the previous summer. Speculation regarding the then Reds captain’s future had started to arise, with the midfielder being linked with a move away as talks dragged on.
But when Klopp was asked about Henderson’s future in mid-August, he was adamant that it would be resolved quickly.
"It is important but it will happen," Klopp said. "We will sort it, however it will be. We will sort it out, no doubt about that. It will get sorted.”

Come the end of the month, the then 31-year-old had signed a four-year deal. And with supporters perturbed by the length of the contract, against FSG’s traditional business model, supporters theorised whether Klopp’s successful intervention had ultimately pushed Edwards towards the exit door.
The German had often spoken about his players’ futures in the past, and would do so again after Henderson’s extension, as he shared his desire for his players to stay put. Emre Can, Gini Wijnaldum, Roberto Firmino, James Milner and Joel Matip would all be on the receiving end of Klopp’s public eyelash flutterings, hoping they would all be offered and agree new contracts.
