Newcastle have released a statement condemning racial abuse sent to midfield duo Joe Willock and Bruno Guimaraes in the aftermath of Saturday's 1-0 win over Arsenal.
The statement reads: «Newcastle United strongly condemns racist abuse sent to Bruno Guimarães and Joe Willock via social media following Saturday's victory over Arsenal. Our message is clear. There is no room for racism in football or society.
»We are providing support to Bruno and Joe and will work with relevant authorities and social media platforms to identify those responsible so that they can be held to account."
Willock, who used to play for Arsenal but was sold for £30million in 2021, was a second half substitute in the game and came on just moments before Anthony Gordon's controversial winner. The 24-year-old came through the Arsenal academy, making 78 appearances for the senior side before moving on as one of the first players signed after Newcastle's ownership changed hands.
He posted on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram after the game, writing: «My team [red heart and black heart emoji]. Big 3 points.» Guimaraes also took to social media to deliver a message to the home fans. He said: «What a result! Big performance for everyone and more 3 points at home [house emoji, smiley face emoji, black and white heart emojis].»
The Brazilian midfielder was involved in one of the games biggest talking points during the first halfas he appeared to elbow Jorginho in the head whilst making a run. The action was looked at by VAR but didn't get punished.
