Speaking at the unveiling of new signing Tiago Mendes, Lille President Olivier Létang has confirmed that Marseille were interested in securing the services of Portuguese manager Paulo Fonseca earlier this summer.
Quizzed on the reports that had linked Fonseca to the managerial hot seat at the Stade Vélodrome, Létang praised the Portuguese tactician’s response as ‘great’.
After spearheading Les Dogues to a 5th-place finish in Ligue 1 last season, Létang concludes that interest in the former AS Roma boss was only natural: ‘I took it very well because we know we have a top, top manager and obviously it’s normal for there to be interest in him’
Presiding over the club’s transfer ambitions this summer, Létang also confirmed that Nabil Bentaleb’s arrival was imminent. Scheduled to undergo his medical today, the former Tottenham midfielder is expected to join the side from fellow Ligue 1 outfit Angers.
Elsewhere, Létang admitted it’ll be difficult to prise Andre Gomes away from Everton. Having spent the previous campaign on loan at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, Letang expects both the fee demanded by the Toffees, and the player’s salary to be too steep to sanction a deal.
