Liverpool have pulled out of the race to sign Xabi Alonso as their next manager after reports in Germany stated that the Reds have cooled their interest considering he is likely to stay at Bayer Leverkusen. Alonso, a former Liverpool player has been a sensation with his coaching technique leading Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga and the quarterfinal of the Europa League. The Spaniard is also attracting interest from Bayern Munich and Real Madrid with the former having asked Thomas Tuchel to leave at the end of the current campaign.
Alonso to Liverpool off?
“Liverpool won’t wait anymore for Xabi Alonso — as Ruben Amorim will be an option already discussed internally, not the only one. Bayern are prepared to wait until Xabi make an official decision, but he’s expected to stay at Leverkusen until June 2025… with release clause,” a statement on popular football journalist Fabrizio Romano’s social media handle read.
Alosno’s Leverkusen are all set to win their first Bundesliga title with them needing not more than 15 points to win the title in eight remaining matches. They are also in the DFB Pokal semifinal and will be the favourites to win that title as well considering the caliber of their opponents. Alonso could also cross paths with Liverpool in the Europa League if both teams reach the final of the tournament.
With Klopp leaving and Alonso all but out of the race to be the new manager, the Reds could switch their attention to Ruben Amorim of Sporting Lisbon. The Portugal gaffer is considered by many as the next Jose Mourinho and has been doing great with the Lisbon outfit.
