Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Paul Clement have switched from being linked with the Ireland managerial vacancy to becoming targets for Canada.
Having reached their first World Cup in 36 years last time, the Canadians want to make a splash at the next version – the 2028 showpiece they’re co-hosting with the USA.
Since Englishman John Herdman left last year to take over MLS side Toronto FC, they’ve been on the lookout for a new gaffer.
According to The Standard, former Manchester United boss Solskjaer is the latest to be contacted to ascertain his interest.
He reportedly held exploratory talks with the FAI about their vacancy but the prospect of taking charge didn’t progress. His former United teammate John O’Shea is in temporary charge as the five-month wait for Stephen Kenny’s successor drags on into the summer.
Another ex-United boss, Jose Mourinho, turned down the transatlantic approach, as did Frank Lampard, but former Jesse Marsch might be amenable. He’s been the assistant boss of the US in the past.
Clement is another potential target, as was supposedly for the FAI, but the talk in Canada is about that proposition enticing Carlo Ancelotti once his spell in Spain concludes.
His assistant at Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea was once Clement, who also held a similar role with Ireland U21s under Don Givens over 15 years ago.
