Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has alerted Chelsea fans to the chances of him joining next year just days after signing a fresh contract. Osimhen was announced as having extended his deal in Italy last week, putting a temporary end to speculation over his future.
However, with the agreement only adding a further year to his stay at Napoli — now until 2026 — many have raised the prospect of it simply being a ploy to raise more money. Osimhen's future has been in the air for much of this season after failing to see eye to eye over a new contract initially as well as becoming annoyed by a social media post that mocked him posted by a club account.
Chelsea have been after a striker of Osimhen's calibre for much of the past 18 months as they look to solve a goalscoring problem that has plagued them, arguably since Tammy Abraham was dropped from the team in early 2021. With Nicolas Jackson currently tasked with doing the business for Mauricio Pochettino there have been mixed results.
Jackson has scored seven times in his first half season in England, a positive return that threatens to push Abraham's 15 as the highest tally by a Blues player since Diego Costa managed 20 in both 2014/15 and 2016/17. The 22-year-old has also had more yellow cards than goals though and has proved incredibly inconsistent.
Playing just a second senior year of senior professional football in Europe's top five leagues and still adapting as a striker, Jackson has shown plenty of glimpses suggesting that his £30million price tag could prove to be somewhat of a bargain. In the short-term though he remains a liability that is, brutally, costing Pochettino points.
