Sean Dyche praised the courage of his players after a second half fightback earned a vital point at Newcastle United.
The Blues boss said he prepared his players for this game by showing them highlights from the run of good form that saw this side win four in a row in December. Everton have not won in the Premier League since then and looked in danger of sliding towards another disappointing defeat early in the second half at St James’ Park.
But Dyche’s triple change sparked a response that saw the hosts buckle under the pressure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin score his first goal since October.

Everton had almost levelled minutes before the striker scored from the spot when James Garner, who alongside Calvert-Lewin and Andre Gomes was introduced to change this game, struck the inside of the post. Both chances were evidence of a resilience that had been missing from recent displays by this squad and which provided the platform for the draw.
Speaking after the match, Dyche said the result was a fitting reward for the efforts of all of his squad. He said: “Before the game I showed them some clips of when we were winning games freely and keeping clean sheets, scoring goals and no-one was questioning anything. And suddenly you get on that run, it sneaks up on you and you haven’t won and the noise changes. I said it wasn’t that long ago when we were playing like we did in that second half, with that edge, you can smell it.
