It means the 2023/24 season could be the first since the 1995/96 campaign to have a game played on Christmas Eve in the top flight.
December is always a very busy for clubs and there is an extra complication this year as December 24 falls on a Sunday.
Saturday December 23 is due to boast a full list of fixtures, with teams expected to be in action again on Boxing Day just three days later.
A number of games would usually be held on the Sunday as part of a regular gameweek, and there have been discussions over whether a normal schedule could be held on Christmas Eve.
According to sources, Wolves vs Chelsea has been selected for the tradition-breaking game, with the match pencilled in for a 1pm kick-off.
The Premier League was expected to announce the full festive fixture list on Friday, but it is understood complications with other fixtures means details are being held until next week.
A game on Christmas Eve would present a particular problem for away supporters, who will be faced with arranging travel from London to Wolverhampton on a day where public transport can be unreliable.
December 24 is a traditional day of travel for many families up and down the country before Christmas festivities kick off, but public transport can often end early and away fans may also be forced to contend with a reduced Sunday service.
