Premier League sides will learn what the latest punishments are for breaching profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) in the near future after Everton had their 10-point deduction reduced last week. With the Toffees set to have their second set of charges combed over in the coming weeks, it is Nottingham Forest under the microscope now.
Forest were charged with breaching PSR when an announcement was made in early January over which clubs had broken the financial regulations relating to an allowed loss threshold over a rolling three-year period — which for them includes time in the Championship — which Forest are deemed to have exceeded.
It follows the unprecedented punishment dished out to Everton late last year.Anger around the punishmenth has somewhat been tempered though after the points deduction was reduced from 10 to six on appeal.
For Sean Dyche's side that was in reference to the period ending in the 2021/22 campaign, whereas Forest's are for results including the 2022/23 season. Everton were also charged with being over the mark once more for the second spell.
After weeks of speculation, though, Forest will find out just what their fate is set to be next week. The Athletic report that a tribunal will go on for two days across Thursday and Friday to decide the outcome. It will include a three-person independent panel tasked with coming up with the appropriate sanctions.
Now that there is a precedent set, Everton's six-point outcome will certainly be of interest. Forest have their own mitigating factors for just why they were over the limit though, centering on the sale of Brennan Johnson.
