Mikel Arteta has urged Gareth Southgate to look past Aaron Ramsdale’s Arsenal exile and consider the goalkeeper for England’s Euros squad this summer.
Southgate will name an England squad for two friendlies — against Brazil and Belgium — on Thursday.
It comes as Ramsdale has been benched since losing his place to David Raya in September.
He will start today with Raya ineligible to face his parent club Brentford at the Emirates.
Arteta said: ‘I don’t know how Gareth is thinking but if I put that situation into my eyes and my perspective and how I make a decision, I would judge Aaron not for what he has done in one day but what he has done in the last two or three seasons and the consistency he has shown, the quality he has shown.
‘It would give me no reason to make another decision.’
On whether Ramsdale is too emotional on the pitch, he added: ‘A player has to be himself and one of the biggest qualities of Aaron is his character and his charisma, his enthusiasm, his energy.
He is contagious with that. You cannot control that. That is him.’
A win for the Gunners on Saturday would put them top of the table ahead of Manchester City’s clash against Liverpool tomorrow.
