Liverpool's pursuit of Xabi Alonso has taken another twist after Bayern Munich saw one of their own potential candidates to succeed Thomas Tuchel sign a new contract.
The German side are keen to push for Alonso to leave Bayer Leverkusen for Bavaria at the end of the season with Tuchel's summer departure already agreed. As the largest club in Bundesliga, their draw to the head coach of champions-elect Leverkusen is understandable.
Liverpool are also assessing Alonso as a potential long-term successor to Jurgen Klopp when the German's nine-year spell at Anfield ends in just three months' time. Within this is the possibility that the Spaniard remains for another year at Leverkusen.

It is just one part of a massive summer switch of managers at the top table of European football. For Bayern, their pool of options has already been damaged.
Amongst the wider pool of candidates to come in after Tuchel is surprise option Sebastian Hoeness. The 41-year-old is only taking charge of his first full season at Stuttgart - who he joined last April in the middle of a relegation battle - but has impressed.
With fewer resources than those around them, Stuttgart sit third in the table and just four points behind Bayern. They are comfortably ahead of both Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig as well as former club Hoffenheim.
It is not just his performance in charge that has seen this link emerge either: Hoeness is the nephew of Bayern great, and former president, Uli Hoeness. Sebastian also spent time between 2017 and 2019 managing the club's youth sides.
