BBC Hairy Bikers visit Liverpool's hidden gem San's Cafe

David Myers and Si King, known as the Hairy Bikers, have spent time exploring some of Merseyside's best foodie offerings.

As part of their new series, The Hairy Bikers Go West, Dave and Si have met with local food producers in Liverpool and Wirral. Previously, in episode three of the seven-part series, they visited Lancashire and discovered Mr Thompson's Bakery in Ormskirk.

Neil Thompson has been running Mr Thompson's Bakery from his home workshop for more than two decades. His family supplies their tasty treats to the town's bi-weekly market, to cafes, farm shops and even schools.

On episode four of their adventure out west, Dave and Si explore what Merseyside has to offer and they quickly realise that Liverpool and Wirral have a top-notch food scene. Thanks to Liverpool's maritime history, Dave and Si discover the city is also home to one of the oldest Chinese communities in Europe.

And tucked away on these historic docks, they discover a local institution and "hidden gem", San’s café. The café was opened in the late 1960s and has been serving authentic cuisine for decades since.

San died in 2014 but his one-of-a-kind café lives on and is now run by his wife Lin and their son Will. Dave and Si sample the cafe’s special chow mein dish and pork dumplings.

They also cook up a traditional Egg Foo Yung, also known as a Chinese Omelette. For the next part of their Merseyside road trip, Dave and Si head out of the city towards Wirral to meet West Kirby-born Guy.
