Mozambique have suffered a second blow to their plans for their opening game at the Africa Cup of Nations finals with injury to defender David Malembana that could keep him out for the opening two matches.
Malembana suffered a hamstring injury in training in the lead-up to Mozambique’s opening game on Sunday against Egypt in Abidjan.
This type of injury takes at least eight days to fully recover," said Mozambique team doctor Mussa Calú.
The Mambas are already without key winger Geny Catamo for their opening group B match as they make their return to the final for the first time since 2010.
He is suspended for one match after an accumulation of cautions in the qualifying competition.
“It's always sad when a member of our group gets injured, in a short tournament like this. That's why I made a point of bringing, in the 23-man squad, two players for each position,” added Mozambique coach Chiquinho Conde.
Mozambique, who have been to four previous finals, are still looking for a first victory at the Cup of Nations finals. They take on the Cape Verde Islands in their second game in Abidjan before finishing their group fixtures against Ghana.
